There are cruises that forever change the way you think about the world, because they evoke strong emotions, they are rich in sensory experiences, and full of extraordinary encounters. The mythological “white continent”, which has long been a ghost on the world’s tourism map, now reveals to us its spectacular landscape: a supernatural polar desert made of ice and water, an enormous ice universe disguising vibrant colors, with white and blue creating a delicate combination within it and nature that recalls its primacy and its ownership in our world.
South America is a energetic continent that combines color, nature and mystery. It’s a fascinating mix of cultures, beauty and nostalgia. We will embark on a fascinating journey from El Calafate in Argentina, through Torres del Paine in Chile, and there’s no way we’ll give up the captivating city Buenos Aires.
This is an unforgettable trip for travelers with an appetite for adventure, a desire for wonderful landscapes, a yearning for natural phenomena and a desire for knowledge – all of it while cruising in a relaxing and tranquil manner.
Day 1: Monday 24/12/18 Buenos Aires (Argentina)
Arrival to Buenos Aires airport, the capital of Argentina, known as the Paris of South America. Meet the tour leader at the hotel.
Day 2: Tuesday 25/12/18 Buenos Aires (Argentina)
After the landing and breakfast, we will tour the city and admire the wide boulevards decorated with trees and flowers, the magnificent plazas, the presidential palace, the Congress Palace, the impressive synagogue, the opera building, the courtroom with the tablets of the law. The Jewish community in Buenos Aires numbers in the tens of thousands with Jewish schools and dozens of synagogues. In the evening we will go to one of the kosher restaurants in the city for a typical meat meal.
Day 3: Wednesday 26/12/18: Buenos Aires – Ushuaia
Today we fly to the southern city of Ushuaia – the capital of the Land of Fire, Tierra del Fuego. Upon landing in Ushuaia, we will tour Tierra del Fuego national park, located 12 kilometers west of the city, which is considered one of the most beautiful parks in Argentina, with dense forests and abundant water, surrounded by mountains and plentiful flora and fauna. The city is surrounded by mountains, surrounded by rivers and enchanting landscapes, among them the Museum of the End of the World, which deals with the area of Tierra del Fuego, including historical and anthropological emphasis.
Day 4: Thursday 27/12/18: Ushuaia – the luxury expedition ship SEA SPIRIT
Today we will travel to the port and board the magnificent cruise liner SEA SPIRIT on its way to Antarctica. Welcome aboard the luxury expedition ship M/V Sea Spirit. Explore the ship and get comfortable in your home away from home for the extraordinary adventure to come. Savor the anticipation of your Antarctic dreams coming true as we slip our moorings and sail toward a true wilderness where wildlife abounds. The scenery as we sail through the Beagle Channel on our first evening is wonderful and there is already the possibility of marine mammal encounters.
Day 5-6 Friday – Shabbat 28-29/12/18: At Sea – Across the Drake Passage
After transiting the Beagle Channel and passing the islands of Tierra del Fuego, we head south across the Drake Passage. Pelagic seabirds including the majestic albatross are common in these waters and can readily be viewed from panoramic open decks or from exterior stateroom windows and balconies. On the way we cross the Antarctic Convergence, the biological boundary of the Southern Ocean. The ship’s stabilizing fins provide comfort in the event of rough seas. Briefings, orientations, and lectures from our expert staff prepare you for our arrival in Antarctica.
Day 7-11 Sunday – Thursday 30/12-3/1/19: South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula
This is expedition cruising at its most authentic. Our route and exploration opportunities in Antarctica are heavily dependent on weather and ice conditions. Our experienced captain and expedition leader decide the itinerary and continually adjust plans as conditions and opportunities warrant. We take advantage of long daylight hours to exploit every opportunity to experience excellent wildlife viewing, amazing scenery, and excursions via Zodiac.
The Antarctic Peninsula region contains some of the world’s most impressive scenery and some of Antarctica’s best wildlife viewing opportunities. Protected bays and narrow channels are surrounded by towering mountain peaks covered in permanent snow and immense glaciers. Icebergs of every size and description complete an image of incomparable beauty. Waters rich with krill are home to a variety of whale and seal species. The whole area is alive with penguins foraging at sea and forming large nesting colonies at special places on land. The area is also home to Antarctic research stations of various nationalities. Some stations have a gift shop and post office.
The South Shetland Islands are the northernmost islands in Antarctica and will likely be our first sighting of land. This wild and beautiful island chain contains numerous landing sites with abundant wildlife and historical significance. Among them is Deception Island, where the flooded caldera of an active volcano harbors an abandoned whaling station.
Farther south, on the Antarctic Peninsula, the vast Gerlache Strait area contains sheltered bays, accessible wildlife, and stunning scenery. Places with names like Paradise Bay are the epitome of everything Antarctic: glaciated mountains, towering icebergs, feeding whales, seals on ice floes, and bustling penguin colonies.
At the southern end of Gerlache Strait is the famous Lemaire Channel, also known as “Kodak Gap” because of the photogenic way the mountainous sides of the narrow channel are reflected in calm waters strewn with icebergs.
Our days in Antarctica are filled with memorable excursions, sumptuous kosher meals, presentations by our experts, and enough incredible scenery and wildlife to fill your camera and overwhelm your emotions.
Day 12-13 Friday – Shabbat 4-5/1/19: Back across the Drake Passage
After our amazing time in Antarctica we cross back north through the bountiful waters of the Drake Passage. Presentations and workshops by our expert staff, as well as our range of onboard recreation facilities, ensure that these days at sea are not idly spent. This is also the time for our End of Voyage ceremonies including slideshow and farewell dinner.
Day 14: Sunday 6/1/9 Ushuaia – El Calafate, the plains of Tierra del Fuego, the Perito Moreno glacier
Today we dock in Ushuaia and the end of our incredible Antarctic cruise. We’ll transfer to the airport and fly to the Pampas area in Patagonia, landing in the town of Calafate, on the banks of Lake Argentino, near the border of the Tierra del Fuego. This is considered the cultural “end of the world.” The Perito Moreno Glacier, which rises 70 meters above the surface of the lake, is 5 kilometers wide and often blocks of ice fall from the glacier into the lake causing a huge “bang.” We’ll explore the landscape from various observation points and learn about this amazing world wonder as sail across the big lake.
Day 15: Monday 7/1/19 El Calafate – Torres del Paine (Chile)
Today we will cross the border between Argentina and Chile on a leisurely journey to the plains of Patagonia. We’ll pass cattle and sheep farms, see the high Andes Mountains, and some isolated towns as we travel along the way. In the afternoon we’ll reach the Torres del Paine reserve. The reserve covers 200 square kilometers of scenic landscape snowy cliffs, ice glaciers, waterfalls and animals such as Guanaco, Puma and South Andean Deer, as well as some of the world’s largest birds such as the condor.
Day 16: Tuesday 8/1/19: Torres del Paine (Chile)
Today, we will continue our tour of this most famous, spectacular nature reserve.
Day 17: Wednesday 9/1/19: Torres del Paine – El Calafate – Buenos Aires
After breakfast, we will leave the nature reserve and drive to Calafate Airport from where we’ll fly to Buenos Aires, a city of over 10 million residents!
Day 18: Thursday 10/1/19: Buenos Aires
After breakfast we will take a tour of Argentina’s capital, called Paris of South America. We’ll admire the wide boulevards decorated with trees and flowers, the magnificent plazas with the presidential palace, the Congress Palace, the impressive main synagogue, the opera building, the courtroom on which the tablets of the covenant are presented, and from which the laws and ethics were given to the world. On the way we’ll pass by dozens of synagogues. In the evening we can go out to a tango show (for a fee).
Day 19: Friday 11/1/19: Buenos Aires
Today we will continue our tour of the city, visiting the famed district of Palermo, the city of beautiful gardens. We continue to the picturesque neighborhood of La Boca, the stronghold of Italian immigrants and the magnificent La Recoleta cemetery, last resting place of many famous people such as Eva Perón, presidents of Argentina, Nobel Prize winners, the founder of the Argentine Navy, and a granddaughter of Napoleon. We will not miss out on the famous “Florida” – the city’s downtown pedestrian mall with its huge department store “Galerias Pacifico.” We’ll return to our hotel to prepare for Shabbat.
Day 20: Shabbat 12/1/19: Buenos Aires
After Shabbat services, Kiddush and lunch, we’ll go out for a walking tour in the area near the hotel.
Day 21: Sunday 13/1/19: Buenos Aires – Back home
