Day 3: Wednesday Lucerne
Depart this morning for the beautiful lakeside city of Lucerne. Boasting invigorating mountain views, lake cruises and a picturesque old quarter, Luzern (Lucerne in English) has long been one of Europe’s most heavily touristed towns. The River Reuss splits the town, flowing rapidly out of the northwestern end of the lake. River banks on both sides are clustered with medieval squares, frescoed houses, ancient guildhalls, churches and chapels, and filled with a liveliness that belies the city’s age. Any tour of Lucerne must begin with a walk over the Medieval covered Kapellbrücke, the oldest road bridge in Europe, angled around the octagonal mid-river Wasserturm. Next, we’ll visit the Löwendenkmal (Lion Memorial) dedicated to the Swiss Guard who died defending Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in 1792. Balance of the day is free to spend as you wish. There are magnificent shops, galleries and cafes, as well as interesting nooks and alleys to explore. Return to Davos

Day 8: Monday Schaffhausen, Basel
This morning we travel north, to the charming town of Schaffhausen, a city with many fine Renaissance Era buildings decorated with exterior frescos and sculptures, as well as the impressive old canton fortress, the Munot. We cross the town to visit the nearby Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall. They are truly magnificent, not so much for their height (23m) as for their impressive breadth and the sheer drama of the place, with the spray rising in a cloud of rainbows above the forested banks. The best way to see the falls is from one of the daredevil boats which scurry around in the spray. In the early afternoon we continue with a visit of Lengnau, in the canton of Aargau, one of two villages where residence was permitted for Swiss Jews between 1633 and 1874. Lengnau's synagogue is listed as a heritage site of national significance. By the way Meyer Guggenheim (1828-1905) a German Jew who emigrated to US in 1847, patriarch and founder of the extremely wealthy Guggenheim family was born in Lengnau. We continue to Basel, where the First Zionist Congress was held in August 1897. Theodor Herzl wrote, "To summarize the Basel Congress in one sentence careful not to pronounce publicly - it is this: I have founded the Jewish state in Basel.". We will see the famous Hotel Drei Könige (Three Kings Hotel) where the Theodor Herzl stayed . Besides Herzl, the hotel has also been visited by Napoleon, Dickens, Voltaire, and Metternich. We stop by the Stadcasino where the Congress itself was held— a concert hall not officially open to viewing. To the right of the stage there is a plaque that reads: "On Theodor Herzl's initiative and under his guidance, the first Zionist organization was established leading to the foundation of the State of Israel." We will visit Switzerland's only Jewish Museum (if time permits) and the Great Synagogue, a national landmark. The synagogue, first built in 1868, was expanded and renovated several times over the past century-and-a-half, it houses two synagogues, a choir, mikveh, and is beautifully designed. Next door to the synagogue is the community center, library, and day school. We drive pass the Israel Park a grove of 40 trees, presented by Israeli president Chaim Herzog, that were given to Basel by the JNF/KKL and the State of Israel on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the State.
